It is August 1st! I can hardly believe it! After a relaxing summer it is just about time for me to gear up and start getting ready for the first day of school.
Trimester 2 is upon us, which means that we have switched math curriculums as part of the district pilot process. During trimester 1 we piloted Math in Focus by Houghton Mifflin, and we are now piloting Math Expressions by Houghton Mifflin. Both curriculums contain research based best practices for math instruction that have been proven to increase student understanding of mathematics. While beneficial, these methods are very different from the route memorization methods that we all so fondly remember! One of the biggest issues that I often come across is that parents have difficulty understanding these newer methods and therefore helping their students at home (you should've seen the look on my husbands face the first time our 1st grader asked him for help!). I'm hoping that aside from the family letters and take home resources, videos and other digital resources on this website will be of use to you. You will be able to find these under the math tab and the corresponding unit. Here are the first two videos of unit 4, I hope that you find them to be helpful! https://www.educreations.com/lesson/view/4-2-visualize-teen-numbers/27168444/?s=t0ZZhg&ref=app
Please note a correction to this weeks newsletter- We practiced the short e sound (as in bed). Our high frequency words for the week were: again, help, new, there, use.
Can you believe that summer is over already? I feel like it went especially fast this year! While technically you have another week of summer all your teachers started the school year promptly at 7:30 am today. I must say, aside from all the standard back to school paperwork and review of policies/ procedures, we have a lot of fun reconnecting and getting ready for your arrival. This year the principals challenged us to a photo scavenger hunt as a team building activity. We are having a blast with it! All fun aside there is a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes. I have moved classrooms over the summer, so there has been a lot of cleaning, sorting and organizing going on. I have a lot of work left to do before I meet you all at open house tomorrow night (4:30 -6:00). I can't wait to meet all of you! ATTENTION! Next week student council will be collecting box tops for our school. Watch this promotional video created by some of Madison's finest, and start collecting those box tops!!! http://vimeo.com/95319735 |
