What is the Daily 5 and CAFE?
The Daily 5 consists of 5 activities that students can choose from each day during Language Arts. Since we are working to become better readers and writers they must choose one reading and one writing activity each day. Within each activity the students are guided to work on specific skills that are supported by the weeks lessons. The 5 choice activities are:
1. Read to Self
2. Read to Someone
3. Write to Self (work on writing)
4. Listen to Reading
5. Word Work
The CAFE stands for the four main components of reading. Within each of these components are various strategies that the students learn and practice in order to become better readers. CAFE stands for:
C- Comprehension; I understand what I read
A- Accuracy; I can read the words correctly
F- Fluency; I can read accurately, with expression, and I understand what I read
E- Extend Vocabulary; I know, find, and use interesting words
Each day I work with individual students and confer with them on the skills they are working on as well as the strategies they are using to become better readers and writers.
